Refinish or replace? The honest test
Refinish when the boxes are solid and the layout works — if the carcases are sound plywood or hardwood, the doors are not delaminating, and you are happy with where everything sits, refinishing is almost always the better value. Replace when the boxes are water-damaged or failing particleboard, when doors are swollen or peeling at the edges, or when you actually want to move things around. We will tell you which case you are in before quoting, including when the answer is that refinishing is not worth your money.
Common questions
How long does a kitchen cabinet refinish take?
Generally three to five days for a full kitchen. The doors and drawer fronts have to be degreased, sanded, sprayed and then left to harden properly before they are rehung, and that cure time is not something worth rushing. Humidity is the main thing that stretches it.
Can I use my kitchen while the cabinets are being refinished?
Mostly yes. The doors and drawer fronts are away being finished, so you have open shelving for a few days, and there will be a day or two where the boxes are masked off and the kitchen is not usable. We tell you which days those are at the estimate so you can plan around them.
Will a refinished cabinet finish chip or peel?
Not if the preparation was done. Peeling is a preparation failure — cabinetry that was not degreased, or was painted straight over a factory finish without sanding. Degreasing and sanding are the two steps that cost time and get skipped, and they are the reason we quote the prep as line items rather than burying it.
