Why a color looks wrong on your wall and right in the store
Color is not a fixed property; it is a reaction to the light hitting it. A north-facing room pulls a warm gray cold and gray-blue, while the same paint in a south-facing room reads almost beige by mid-afternoon. Your bulb temperature shifts it again after dark. This is also why a two-inch chip is misleading — color intensifies as the area grows, so a swatch that looks safely muted can read startlingly saturated across a whole wall. The only reliable test is a real sample, painted large, on the wall it is destined for, looked at morning, afternoon and evening.
Common questions
Is color consultation something you charge for separately?
When we are doing the painting, talking colors and sheens through with you is simply part of the estimate and the walkthrough — it is not a line item we add on. If you want a standalone consultation without the painting work attached, call and ask and we will tell you how we handle it rather than quoting you something here that may not fit your situation.
How many different colors should a house have?
Fewer than most people expect. A common approach that works is one main wall color carried through the shared spaces, one trim and one ceiling color used consistently throughout, and then one or two rooms allowed to do something different — a bedroom, a study, a powder room. That keeps the house coherent while still letting individual rooms have character. Where it goes wrong is a different color in every room, which reads as busy rather than considered.
Can you match a color from a photo or from another room?
From another room in your house, usually yes — we can take a sample and match to it closely. From a photograph, treat it as a starting point rather than a match. Screens and cameras shift color, and the lighting in someone else's photo is doing a lot of the work you are actually responding to. We will get close and then test it on your wall, which is the only place the answer is real.
